Vintage Hermes Silk Scarf 

"Kachinas" was designed by Kermit Oliver.  Kermit Oliver is the first - and until very recently, only - American artist invited to design for Hermes. A black American who grew up in Texas.  Kermit's art has always been influenced by Native American patterns.  This classically loved design was produced in a variety of colors for the unique collector. Hopi Kachinas and more Native American motifs are seen in a beautiful circular pattern.

Material: 100% Silk

Condition: Great condition - very minor loose thread stitching on the edges of hand-rolling. Comes with vintage orange Hermes box.

Size: 36" x 36" (90cm); as each scarf is hand rolled, there is slight variation in size

The story behind the design:

Kachinas are ceremonial dolls given to Hopi children, Pueblo Indians residing in the southwestern part of the United States. The Hopi live peacefully, as their name implies – Hopituh Shi-nu-mu means “The Peaceful People” – , and in harmony with spirits. Ancestors, clouds, gods of fire or rain, mischievous or benevolent spirits are personified in religious ceremonies involving boys from the age of six, during their initiation. A link between the real and invisible worlds, these brightly colored wooden dolls charged with symbolism are given to children to familiarize them with their ancestral beliefs and rituals.
