Opinel No.09 Folding Oyster Knife

 

Unique in its folding design, the No.09 Oyster Knife with Padouk handle was designed to safely stow away, making it easy to carry - whether that’s on a boat, or in your pocket as you head to the beach. With a short, robust blade the unique design centers the knife’s axis to facilitate easy oyster opening. Thanks to the Virobloc® locking ring, it will stay closed when you want it to, and open when you need it to!

While Opinel is known for its signature sharp blades, this knife features a blunted blade with a sharp tip, specific to oyster shucking. The padouk wood handle is resistant to swelling, and utilized for its ability to hold up well in humid or wet environments.

Since 1890, Opinel has pioneered high-quality folding knives using wood from local, sustainably managed forests. For over 130 years Opinel has been crafting knives and tools in the heart of the French Alps. Much like Joseph Opinel did from his workshop in 1890, today we still manufacture Opinel products from our factory in Chambery, France.  When Joseph Opinel designed his first pocket knife in 1890, the French blacksmith created a tool that was robust, simple, and beautiful. Crafted in the Alps from local materials, that knife would go on to become a design icon, passed down by generations of artists, explorers, farmers, and adventurers. 

The safety ring, added in 1955, locks the blade into the open position to prevent slips. The Virobloc system has since been updated to also turn to lock the blade in the closed position. The blade unfolds easily thanks to its nail groove. However, those practiced in the art can tap the heel of the handle hard on a table once and the blade will come out of the slit slightly. When open, the tip of the blade will be approximately level with the center of the ferrule's rivet.
