Kate Breakey, Australian born 1957

Rose 8 x 8 Archival pigment print printed directly on to plates of glass. Gold leaf is then hand-applied by the artist, and custom framing finishes each work. 

Kate Breakey's artistic process is an act of investigation – a passionate attempt to establish an understanding of the natural world – a version that incorporates both intellectual and emotional comprehension which are sometimes incompatible, and distill them into a visual language of images where they can be contemplated. Making images of these things is a natural extension of being fascinated, touch, or intrigued by them. Breakey claims that this process of seeing, and recording transforms her. It is how she expresses wonder and love, a form of dedication. It is also a record of her life and desire to connect herself to all other things, the acknowledgement of a search for explanation, for meaning and significances, a primal longing to grasp things which are unknowable. Since 1980 her work has appeared in more than 110 one-person exhibitions and in over 60 group exhibitions. A native of South Australia, Kate moved to Austin, Texas in 1988. Kate Breakey is internationally known for her large-scale, richly hand-colored photographs including her acclaimed series of luminous portraits of birds, flowers and animals in a series called Small Deaths
